Lower School encompasses Kindergarten – Grade 4, and our academic program employs a developmental approach to learning. Educational content is tailored to be appropriate for each student’s individual development and is delivered in an atmosphere that is both exciting and enjoyable. Students learn and interact in child-centered classrooms with a curriculum that stresses intellectual growth through academic and personal achievement. Smaller classes provide the perfect environment for individual intellectual growth. Substantial research supports the idea that a child whose class size is smaller during the early years excels in academic achievement over peers in large classrooms – not just in those years, but for many years afterwards – even after leaving the small classroom environment. Walden Lower School students experience a varied and challenging curriculum. Specialty classes such as music, art, foreign language, computer, science and physical education complement the classroom basics of language arts, math and social studies. Clearly, the early school experiences impact a student's lifelong approach to learning, so Lower School students are encouraged to participate in school-wide activities that foster a sense of belonging. Walden is very proud of the relationship between the Lower School and our High School students. Every Lower School student has a “Pal” in the MIddle School who acts as guide, mentor and friend, and who provides a sense of continuity and community.
