Our History
Walden School was founded in 1975 as an independent, coeducational school offering a thirteen-year sequence of college preparatory training. The founder, Dr. Edward Vermillion, served as its first headmaster until 1980. His goals for Walden were grounded in his philosophical belief that all students thrive in an educational environment that is nurturing and developmentally age- appropriate.
Walden opened on the campus of the former Kentucky Military Institute, but moved to its present location at 4238 Westport Road in January 1981. In 2002, after many years of growth, Walden embarked on a building campaign to add additional classrooms and update existing resources. In 2005, Walden completed the second story of a two-story addition to Bower Hall, which included a remodeled gym, nine classrooms, a new high school science lab, art studio and performing arts hall.
Walden’s heritage is rooted in the vision of its founder, the generosity of families whose personal sacrifices have supported and sustained its growth, the dedication of the faculty, and in the students themselves. Their Walden experience has prepared them to pursue their academic and professional goals.
