Walden Athletics
Mission Statement: The Walden School Department of Athletics, in partnership with families, is committed to providing every student an opportunity to participate in a sports environment that will foster a life-long enthusiasm for the development of the body, as well as the mind, and which will ingrain the lessons of sportsmanship, teamwork, commitment, and camaraderie that will serve them well in their future endeavors.

Athletic participation at Walden is an extra-curricular activity, designed to complement, not replace or compete with academic programs. Academics must come first. Grade checks are conducted on a weekly basis. We see sports as another avenue for involvement, in the school, in their families, and in each other’s lives. That involvement will contribute to a sense of community and family. That, in turn, will lead to a vibrant, enthusiastic camaraderie that makes a school successful…. a place that students want to be…. a home away from home.

At Walden, we make every effort to have our coaches be in-house. The advantage of having a coach who is also a teacher are obvious. There is already a connection and it works toward the goal of involvement of kids, faculty and parents in creating our family, our pride and our spirit. It is extremely beneficial for the teacher to see the student in a non-classroom setting and equally beneficial for the student to see the teacher in another light.

Athletics Philosopy
Walden School has a no-cut policy in sports because all students are encouraged to participate. We believe that students learn valuable lessons from sports. Being part of a team can teach responsibility, motivation, time management, a sense of self-worth and connection, pride, testing personal limits, initiative, cooperation, respect, health, commitment, and the valuable lesson that life is not always fair. These outcomes are an integral part of a properly-run sports program. All contribute to a student’s academic achievement and personal development.
