Philosophy

The Walden community provides an atmosphere where academic, cultural, and religious differences are acknowledged, respected, and celebrated. Walden, in partnership with families, assists students in acquiring knowledge, skills, and values needed to accept responsibility for their lives in a changing world. These values will allow them to play an effective role in a multicultural society. Walden fosters an educational environment in which academic and intellectual growth is complemented by a concern for moral, physical, and psychological growth.

Walden recognizes that there are differences in the rates and patterns of growth and development in each individual student. Through small class size, a carefully planned and frequently reviewed college preparatory curriculum, and continuous professional excellence in the faculty, Walden provides guidance and assistance in all aspects of the student's school experience.

School For Families

Students don't attend Walden; families do. The support and participation of the parent is critical to the success and well-being of the student. Walden has an unusually active Parents Association, a Board of Trustees in which parents of Walden students are well represented, and a wide range of family activities such as Grandparents Day, Doughnuts with Dad, Muffins with Mom, the Jubilee Auction, an annual Thanksgiving lunch, a parent's newsletter and an open visitation policy. All of these contribute to Walden's program for encouraging a closer parent to school relationship.

Walden History

Walden School was founded in 1975 as an independent, coeducational school offering a thirteen-year sequence of college preparatory training.  The school founder, Dr. Edward Vermillion, served as its first headmaster until 1980.  His goals for Walden were grounded in his philosophical belief that all students thrive in an educational environment that is nurturing and developmentally age appropriate.

Walden School is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) and is governed by a Board of Trustees composed of parents, alumni and community representatives.  Ms. Linda Van Houten has served as the Head of School since 1993.

Walden originally opened on the campus of the former Kentucky Military Institute but moved to its current location at 4238 Westport Road in January 1981.  In 2002, Walden embarked on a building campaign to add additional classrooms and update existing resources.  In 2005, Walden completed the second story of a two-story addition to Bower Hall, which included a remodeled gym, nine classrooms, a new high school science lab, art studio and performing arts hall.  The former high school chemistry lab was remodeled for a second science lab for middle school students.

Today, Dr. Vermillion’s vision is realized in the dedication of Walden faculty.  Walden is proud of its community atmosphere where academic, cultural and religious differences are acknowledged, respected and celebrated.  Walden graduates have a 100% acceptance rate to college. They enter diverse fields of study.  Many of them pursue post-secondary educations.  Walden graduates are represented in all professions:  medicine, dentistry, law, engineering, pharmacy, sales, business, entertainment, architecture, graphic designers, advertising, public relations, and the list goes on.

Walden’s heritage is rooted in the vision of its founder, the generosity of its families whose personal sacrifices have supported and sustained its growth, the dedication of the faculty, and to the students themselves.  Their Walden experience has prepared them to pursue their academic and professional dreams.
